History
Pilates is a movement method from the life work of Joseph H. Pilates (1883 – 1967), his partner, Clara, and their many students. During World War I, Pilates helped rehabilitate fellow German internment camp detainees using his extensive knowledge of physical fitness and, creatively, hospital bed springs for increased resistance and range of motion. These techniques resulted in his patent for what is now called the reformer.

Pilates believed mental and physical health are essential to one another. He called his method Contrology, because he believed his method uses the mind to control the muscles. The program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles.

From History to Our Studio
At Cor Pilates we modify movements to best suit you: focusing on your core strength, whether you are an athlete or are recently released from physical therapy. We will move your spine through its complete range of motion to keep it flexible and promote whole body health.

While there are many current interpretations of the work, most agree on the following common characteristics: balanced muscle development, breath, concentration, control, centering, fluidity, precision and whole body engagement. When choosing your form of Pilates, remember to privately consult your physician regarding any of your special conditions before discussing private versus group training with our certified instructors.
